THE APPRENTICES

Christmas Jesus (for alternate voices)

A challenge to take the baby out of the Christmas Manger and allow Him to be the Man who went to the Cross for us at Easter. I have a Christmas Jesus – He comes out once a year; I place him in the manger, and he’s Such a dear. And then, there’s the mother, Mary, Cloaked in Madonna Blue; She smiles an enigmatic smile, But humble, too.

Christmas Jesus (for alternate voices)

I have a Christmas Jesus –

He comes out once a year;

I place him in the manger, and he’s

Such a dear.

And then, there’s the mother, Mary,

Cloaked in Madonna Blue;

She smiles an enigmatic smile,

But humble, too.

While Joseph, the surrogate father,

Stands to the left of the crib,

Asking himself the question, ‘Will the baby

Need a bib?’

Around the crib the shepherds,

Soiled with the smell of the sheep,

Bow in wonder, wondering why

The baby’s not asleep.

And Gabriel, the Angel, hovers

Entwined with the Christmas Fairy –

A twin-piece mobile hung from the ceiling, blessing

The Virgin Mary.

Yes, I have a Christmas Jesus:

Mainly he’s kept in a box;

I bring him out for Christmas, then I wrap him

In Christmas socks.

Do you have a Christmas Jesus:

Endlessly locked in a ‘Groundhog Day’?

Ever the infant, never the Man?

It’s easier that way.
