A Frog He Would
Froggie asked for a poem late on and this popped out. A frog he would a-wooing go: He balled his cheeks, began to blow; He blew a kiss which struck a crow. A frog he would a-wooing go.

A Frog He Would
A frog he would a-wooing go:
He balled his cheeks, began to blow;
He blew a kiss which struck a crow.
A frog he would a-wooing go.
A cow she would a-mooing go:
And with a sigh began to low;
She started fast and ended slow.
A cow she would a-mooing go.
A dove he could a-cooing go
From roof to garden down below,
From owl to fowl with pigeon toe.
A dove he could a-cooing go.
A frog, a cow, a dove: all three
Went wooing, mooing, cooing free
Within the pond, the field, the tree,
The wooing, mooing, cooing three.

A Tale of Four Farmers
Originally written for a school lesson at Gwladys Street CP School as part of one of the Assembly Roadshow presentations. Pure moonshine and nothing but arrant nonsense.

A Tale of Four Farmers
Farmer Fred met Farmer Ned beside the bed of Farmer Ted.
Said Fred to Ned but not to Ted, “Now, where on earth is Farmer Jed?”
Ned said to Fred, who glanced at Ted, “I do hear tell he’s gettin’ wed.”
“He’s getting wed?” said Fred to Ned. “Now, who on earth would marry Jed?”
“I do hear tell,” said Ned to Fred, “it be that girl of Farmer Ted.”
“That girl,” said Fred, “with hair bright red, with feet of lead and heavy tread?”
“That’s roight,” said Ted upon his bed, “my little girl with hair so red.”
“Oh Ted,” said Ned. “Oh Ted,” said Fred. “Are you not filled with
desperate dread?”
“With desperate dread, I am,” said Ted. “’Tis why I’ve taken to my bed.
“I’ve ate no bread. I have not fed. I’d sooner wish that she were dead.”
“Oh, Ted,” said Fred. “Oh, Ted,” said Ned.
“Get up.” “I can’t. My wits are fled.”
Then Fred and Ned took hold of Ted and lifted him from off his bed.
And to the church with him they sped, despite the fact his feet had bled.
And then, before the vows were read, they pulled the veil right off her head.
She should not marry Farmer Jed. She might have married Farmer Fred.
Or even Ned. Or even Ned. She could have married Farmer Ned.
She couldn’t marry Farmer Ted. She shouldn’t marry Farmer Jed.
She wouldn’t marry Farmer Ned. She didn’t marry Farmer Fred.
Instead, she married Ploughman Bert. The one with gravy on his shirt.

You can have spare ribs
on a silver spoon,
if you like,
for all I care.
Me, I know what kind
of an eater I am.
And I don’t intend
to share with no-one.”
“Except you, dear .”

THE EXILES
AM I?
A question at the heart of society's many ills – Am I really my sister-brother's keeper? AM I? Why should I care about anyone else? Why should I care about YOU! Why should I interest myself in your lives? Why should I mind what you do?
Read the written poem
AM I?
Why should I care about anyone else?
Why should I care about YOU!
Why should I interest myself in your lives?
Why should I mind what you do?
Why should I worry? Why should I stress?
Why should I care for my neighbour?
Why should I talk to him? What could I say?
When I know that the old boy votes Labour!
Why should I …. why should I… why should I care?
I’m busy enough with my own life.
If I fuss and I fret and show care for some woman
I’ll likely end up with a wife.
And why should I bother with that awful old biddy
With hair like Virginia Creeper?
She’s got nits; she’s got fleas and she smells like a fish.
Am I really my sister-brother’s keeper?

We could not believe it when the word came through:
‘Serried ranks to report for singing duty.’
There had been rumours of a war on the eastern front but this, this came totally out of the deep azure of High Heaven: Planet Earth, Tellus, third out from Sol, minor planetary system, far edge of a distant Galaxy – about as far from the heart of the Universe as could be.
And HE
from whom – through – to – by whom
ALL THINGS
seen unseen sentient consentient
EXIST AND HAVE THEIR BEING
becomes less than the least
yet more than…
How can giving up … risking all … release such…?
We are … we remain wordless.
For my part I could have left them to themselves…to their choices…
The Burning Ones fell. They made their choices…never to rise again.
But these … neither one world nor the other. These… who live by
“I will I will not
I may I may not”
filing the fulcrum
swinging the seesaw
of tomorrow today.
These come-and-go-humans who blow hot and cold on a whim…
For my part … but my part is to serve and to sing.
I bow in wonder

Of fire
Your prayer has been heard
High Heaven Above
Your wife prepared
for Mother Love
His name to be John
Joy and Delight
He will begin
to put things right
Brim full Spirit of God
from birth
Preaching repentance heard
here on earth
This is Elijah-Again
preparing the nation
Fathers and their children
reconciliation
You speak of doubt
show indecision
Your faith without
the requisite precision
I am Gabriel
I stand in the Presence
Sent with the Gospel
of the Divine Essence
Your incredulity to be a sign
as you will learn
Struck speechless for a time
dumb the full term
My words shall come true
as you will find
I am Gabriel and you
and yours will bless mankind

THE APPRENTICES
Christmas Jesus (for alternate voices)
A challenge to take the baby out of the Christmas Manger and allow Him to be the Man who went to the Cross for us at Easter. I have a Christmas Jesus – He comes out once a year; I place him in the manger, and he’s Such a dear. And then, there’s the mother, Mary, Cloaked in Madonna Blue; She smiles an enigmatic smile, But humble, too.

Christmas Jesus (for alternate voices)
I have a Christmas Jesus –
He comes out once a year;
I place him in the manger, and he’s
Such a dear.
And then, there’s the mother, Mary,
Cloaked in Madonna Blue;
She smiles an enigmatic smile,
But humble, too.
While Joseph, the surrogate father,
Stands to the left of the crib,
Asking himself the question, ‘Will the baby
Need a bib?’
Around the crib the shepherds,
Soiled with the smell of the sheep,
Bow in wonder, wondering why
The baby’s not asleep.
And Gabriel, the Angel, hovers
Entwined with the Christmas Fairy –
A twin-piece mobile hung from the ceiling, blessing
The Virgin Mary.
Yes, I have a Christmas Jesus:
Mainly he’s kept in a box;
I bring him out for Christmas, then I wrap him
In Christmas socks.
Do you have a Christmas Jesus:
Endlessly locked in a ‘Groundhog Day’?
Ever the infant, never the Man?
It’s easier that way.
